Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II (1977)
Vehicle description
The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was a luxury saloon car built from 1965 to 1980. It was the first Rolls-Royce to be constructed using a monocoque chassis and to date has the largest production volume of any Rolls-Royce. The original Shadow was three and a half inches narrower and seven inches shorter than the Silver Cloud which it replaced, but managed to offer increased passenger and luggage space thanks to more efficient packaging made possible by its construction.
Aside from a more modern appearance and construction, the Silver Shadow introduced many new features such as disc brakes instead of drum brakes and independent rear suspension rather than the ageing live axle design of previous cars. The Silver Shadow featured a 172bhp, 6.2 litre, V8 from 1965-69, and an 189bhp, 6.75 litre, V8 from 1970 to 1980. Both engines were mated to a Turbo Hydromantic 400 transmission which came from General Motors except on pre-1970 right hand drive models which used the same four speed automatic gearbox as the Silver Cloud, also a General Motors unit. The superb ride quality achieved in the Shadow was thanks to the innovative high-pressure hydraulic system with dual-circuit braking and hydraulic self-levelling suspension.
Originally registered on 1st August 1977, this Rolls-Royce has had an interesting life. The original owner had the car for 18 months covering minimal mileage during his ownership. The car was then sold by Lex Mead of Maidenhead to the second owner who again did very little mileage in the car. She was then sold to Mr. Thomas Jefferson from Wiltshire. He and his family moved to Guernsey in 1982 and he enjoyed the car so much he took the Silver Shadow with him, at the time the odometer reading was 26,800 miles. Mr. Jefferson passed away in the late 90s and his daughter took responsibility of the car keeping it maintained at the Rolls-Royce agent in St. Peter Port. She has now moved from Guernsey and the Silver Shadow has once again come back to the mainland. Presenting in exceptional order with very good Willow Gold coachwork and matching Chestnut interior we are advised this low mileage example drives exceedingly well.
A splendid example of a marque and model that has been in high demand of late.
