The Mercedes-Benz W113 SL was developed under the auspices of Mercedes-Benz technical director Fritz Nallinger, chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and head of styling, Friedrich Geiger. The lead designers were Paul Bracq and Bela Barenyi who created its distinctive, patented, slightly concave hardtop which inspired the 'Pagoda' nickname. The model was manufactured from 1963 through to 1971 and boasted an in-line straight six-engine with multi-port fuel injection. Mercedes-Benz chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who was as competent behind the wheel as most racing drivers, demonstrated the capabilities of the 230 SL on a tight short race track near Montreux in 1963 where he put up a best lap time of 47.5 seconds and, incidentally, out-performed Mike Parkes in his Ferrari 250GT.
This particular righthand drive manual 230 SL Pagoda, presented in white with contrasting red interior, was originally imported from Florida in 1990.
